Asia-Pacific Gathers for Arms Trade Treaty Conference

PacCon19
Pacific Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty, February 2019 - Deepayan Basu Ray, CAVR

50 state and civil society delegates from Asia-Pacific convened in Brisbane, Australia in late February for the 2019 Pacific Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty (PacCon2019), organised by the Centre for Armed Violence Reduction (CAVR).  The event facilitated discussions on the universalisation and implementation of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).

Hosted and sponsored by Australia and New Zealand, the conference aimed to provide a forum on shared objectives towards ratification/implementation of the ATT from a regional perspective. From record-keeping, to national reporting, and inter-agency coordination, participants discussed the various ways in which countries in the region can access available tools, resources, and assistance in order to address challenges in the ratification and implementation of the treaty.

Representatives from the Arms Trade Treaty Secretariat, the Chair of the VTF Selection Committee and German Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Control Arms, Melanesian Spearhead Group, Nonviolence International Southeast Asia, Pacific Small Arms Action Group and the Stimson Center were all in attendance at this year’s conference.
